About
SAJB
|
|
|
The
Spokane Aquifer Joint Board (SAJB) is comprised of
twenty-two water purveyors throughout the Spokane area dedicated
to providing safe, clean drinking water to your homes, offices
and industries every day. Collectively we operate 122
wells, supplying drinking water to more than 300,000 people
in the Spokane area. Each purveyor draws water from the same
source - the SPOKANE VALLEY - RATHDRUM PRAIRIE AQUIFER.
Our
collective priority is to protect the public water supply
by coordinating efforts, performing and sponsoring studies
and investigations, and providing a discussion forum with
respect to developing and implementing public water supply
programs such as:
- wellhead
protection,
- conservation,
and
- protection
of associated Water Rights.
In
our efforts to protect the Aquifer and the Wellheads through
which your drinking water is drawn, we formed the SAJB and
completed a lengthy Wellhead Protection Plan. We are now implementing
our Wellhead Protection Program, working within four distinct
areas of emphasis to increase citizen awareness and cooperation
in protecting this irreplaceable resource.

SPOKANE
AQUIFER JOINT BOARD WELLHEAD PROTECTION PROGRAM
Areas
of Emphasis
EDUCATION and AWARENESS - develops and implements
a long-term awareness campaign targeted at citizens
living and working over the Aquifer.
HOUSEHOLD
CONTAMINANT DISPOSAL -
provides
assistance to residents with pickup and disposal of
contaminants by augmenting the current collection
efforts of the Spokane Regional Solid Waste System.
out how to dispose of ALL household hazardous materials
properly at NO CHARGE, or call the Recycling Hotline
for hours
and directions.
Recycling Hotline: 509/625-6800
PRO-ACTIVE
BUSINESS ASSISTANCE - provides assistance and
information (not enforcement) to small businesses
for contaminant disposal methods and procedures. If
your business generates less than 200 pounds of dangerous
waste or 2.2 pounds of acute hazardous waste per month,
call Spokane Regional Solid Waste System. If your
business generates more than 200 pounds of dangerous
waste or more than 2.2 pounds of acute hazardous waste
per month, call the Washington State Department of
Ecology. Click here for more
information.
Spokane Regional Solid Waste System: 509/625-7898
Washington State Department of Ecology: 509/329-3409
POTENTIAL
CONTAMINANT SOURCE INVENTORY - develops and maintains
a regional potential contaminant source inventory
database. Under current Washington State regulations
for wellhead protection, every two years water purveyors
are required to notify potential contaminant sources
(businesses) that are located within defined wellhead
protection areas. This is a reminder of the business
location over the Aquifer, and the need to protect
it.
