  • Committee Reports
    • ProActive Business – if you know an agency needing intern assistance with tasks related to aquifer protection and business assistance, please call Julia with ideas
    • Potential Contaminant Source Inventory Update – PCSI letter & Business Guide sent to 3,658 businesses on the 2005 list
    • Household Contaminant Disposal –Spokane Regional Solid Waste System, Scott Windsor, April ’06 to ’05 comparison overall tally: collections up 9 to 10 % from 2005, except used motor oil, which decreased – considered weather dependent;
    • State Dept of Health provided funds for week in April to support a mercury collection event, including 10 days for small businesses to dispose – collected 217 lbs, the best county in Washington; items included blood pressure cuffs, school thermometers, bottles of liquid mercury used as lab or mining reagents.
    • Education & Awareness – Aquifer booth at South Pines Elementary 5/30; expecting 2nd draft of interpretive signs; Placemat map drafts underway; recount of Lawton Printing donated paper will enable ~100,000 to be printed @ $.05ea; four entities pledge to contribute, other cost-sharing partners being sought
    • Website – total website sessions for May 2006 = 1237; updated with Poster Contest winners & Aqua Duck Comic Book #2, which is downloadable from the site
    • Wellhead Protection Area Committee – June 15 meeting topics:  What is acceptable wellhead protection; Within a designated protection area, what do purveyors want to see regulated vs. what’s realistic/acceptable to land use regulators; Should a model (and which model) determine the wellhead protection zones, or should a designated distance and configuration be made the standard – while considering that there is a different importance assigned to different wells, whether it is the majority of the system supply or for seasonal or part-time use –> have Districts apply importance factors to each well and reevaluate capture zone size and configuration? Each District to revisit their Capture Zone Contingency Plan (in Vol III, Wellhead Protection Plan)?; Do we work to regulate land use within wellhead protection zones or activities that take place on the land, including industrial, commercial, storm water and wastewater?  Conduct another survey to see if aquifer protection through regulation is palatable to citizens; Invite land use regulators to Aquifer Protection discussions
    • Emergency Planning – repeat information:  Contact Sheriff’s Deputy Greg Snyder 477-2592 or Deputy Travis Pendell 477-6044, if you wish to have an on-site review of your facility to improve system security.
  • PROGRAM LEADER REPORT – Julia McHugh

Guest speaker Mr. Bruce Rawls, Spokane County Utilities Director, and Dave Clark, HDR (consultant for wastewater reclamation & recharge report) to address ‘Aquifer Recharge with Treated Wastewater’, and other wastewater planning issues, incl. urban irrigation, recharge, wetlands restoration

 1) Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC) – June 8 meeting attended by Dave Enos – nothing to report

2) Aquifer Protection Council – June meeting cancelled, next scheduled for July 18th, 2:00 @ Ecology
